Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis, has shifted its promise to fully transition to electric vehicles in the next 10 years. This marks a positive development for electrification enthusiasts as they are now adopting a dual strategy that also includes hybrid vehicles.

The manufacturer stated that the next-generation hybrids will not only bring efficiency and performance improvements over current models but will also incorporate features that were previously mainly reserved for pure electric vehicles. Last year, Genesis’ global head, Mike Song, mentioned that buyers are clearly more interested in hybrid vehicles than pure electric ones, prompting the company to work on new electric models to meet this demand. They have now tested prototypes for their future hybrid range, which will also include Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV).

Manfred Harrer, a senior engineer responsible for powertrains, emphasized that performance will be the primary focus driving the creation of the next-generation electric vehicles from Genesis. Harrer stated, “With my roots in vehicle dynamics and performance, my latest mission to marry Genesis’ premium luxury approach with a highly engaging performance approach is very exciting.”

Although details about Genesis’ upcoming EREVs are limited, Harrer shared some insights after spending time with the prototype. He mentioned that the beauty of EREVs lies in combining EV driving characteristics – instant high torque and a quiet cabin – with extended range capabilities. Importantly, EREVs offer enough power for towing capacities – an issue that still remains unresolved with EVs.

The new Genesis EREV will be a smaller battery version of the manufacturer’s future EVs, which will also feature a combustion-powered generator to extend range and charging capabilities. All vehicles built on the new platform will feature rear-wheel drive bias, positively impacting the driving experience. Harrer expressed that balancing drivelines and utilizing different tire types could further enhance grip levels.

Hyundai recently unveiled some specifications for its new hybrid system, likely to be utilized in Genesis models. One innovation includes integrating a starter generator and hybrid traction motor within the gearbox to improve smoothness, reduce noise, and minimize vibrations in transmissions outputting up to 340 horsepower.

The company confirmed that fuel efficiency increases by up to 45%, and power is boosted by 19% compared to non-hybrid models with the same engine. Moving forward, Hyundai will adopt a smaller 1.6-liter turbo-four engine for mid-range models. These enhancements not only promise performance gains but also pave the way for future hybrid and electric vehicles from the brand.

Manfred Harrer also discussed the upcoming Genesis GV60 Magma Concept, a high-performance version anticipated to debut later this year. This model will be the brand’s first to bear the Magma designation, signifying the best performing offerings from the manufacturer. With exciting prospects on the horizon for Genesis and Hyundai, the companies assure consumers that they will be pleased with whichever powertrain they choose.
